A series of images developed for the the Dhol Chants release by David Roocroft in 2016. Working inside a dystopian scifi narrative developed in collaboration with David the images play with ideas of fashion as camouflage, commodification, ubiquitous scanning, and overpopulation.

The images form part of a new series of speculative objects looking to our future….

A series of animated GIFS developed from the official Uniqlo x Disney “Magic for All” campaign. Each garment is branded from a famous disney film and required a simple graphical language to be developed to situate each photo sequence in the world of the movie.

Working with FIELD for the Nike Brand Design team, Paul Mumford assisted in the development of their new visual language for American Football, shifting the image of the sport from aggressive to strategic. The development work resulted in a new Global Design Directive for Nike NFL titled Untouchable Speed: A minimalist and classical new concept for graphics, photographic style and composition, focussed on the athleticism and tactical finesse of the sport, and inspired by the heroism of greek sculpture.

The early development work went on to create a suite of films, retail installations, online and social media assets to promote the NFL Games hosted at London’s Wembley Stadium in autumn 2015.

Back in 2008 I did some work with DFuse for the IFA: the world’s largest consumer electronics event. The original commission from Dfuse was to create a typographic film exploring the latest Ebook reader from Sony. In 2014 the work went on to be published in the book titled “Design Type” by the Burge Agency!

Tekton is an ongoing collaboration between Labmeta and DFuse exploring the materiality and temporality of light in motion. Multi-layered light-emitting objects are organised into kinetic structures that are governed by algorithmic systems. As the mechanics of the devices are rendered invisible, traces of light remain. The fragile binaries of disorder and pattern, light and dark, harmony and disarray, human and machine become delicatly balanced as they are stabilised in motion and ghost-like images hang in the air.

Tekton One Three functions as a machine that prints light in space: A strip of LEDs is put in vertical motion by a motor, while the LEDs themselves are programmed with touch designer to emit sequences of light in horizontal patterns. In the relationship between these two directions of movement, between light transversing space and afterimage imprinted on the retina, various complex patterns emerge. Dots, lines and curves overlap to create traces of movement, light and dark, pattern and disorder, harmony and dissonance.

Tekton is a series of audiovisual works exploring kinetic light machines, produced as a collaboration with Mike Faulkner from DFuse.

Digital machines are created with machine like movements and constraints so they can be performed to reveal emergent patterns of light, rhythm and form in a recursive intermingling between human and machine.

Initially beginning as a series of animated films the project has expanded into an audiovisual show which has featured at Multiplicidades in Brazil, STRP Bienalle in Eindhoven and the Punto y Raya Festival in Iceland.

Flexure is a realtime animated film and dual screen installation by Davide Quayola, produced for Nike and the Milan Design Festival, with animation and post production support by Paul Mumford.

The work is created with the custom realtime software “Partitura”, built in vvvv and developed as a collaboration between Quayola and Natan Sinigaglia over the past several years. The process involved manipulating and setting up time driven data streams to generate the motion of the object in a realtime loop of flexing.
