Art Direction for Realtime XR
w/ Marshmallow Laser Feast

"Dream" is a realtime XR work derived from Shakespeares "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Produced with R&D funding from the UKRI, Marshmallow Laser Feast concieved of a 10 minute, interactive, real-time and live performance piece.

The objective was to reaching a large scale audience and feel as "live" as possible (while under Covid-19 lockdown conditions).

The design team had to deliver a magical yet coherant and cohesive story experience across multiple digital sets, environments and multiple digital character performances.

To feel as 'live' as possible the character design and choreography had to remain in dialougue throughout the production, requiring an agile and flexible approach. Insights during the rehearsals would inform the character design on an ongoing basis.

Using Side FX's Houdini, Unreal Engine, an agile methodology and a stack of remote tools, a creative pipeline was developed.

Using procedural tools and rapid 3D prototyping, sketches could quickly be taken into real-time programming ready for rehearsal.

Cycles of feedback from the cast and choreographer working in a remote mo-cap studio in Portsmouth would lead to iterative changes in rigging, design and animation processes.

Audiences were invited to explore the forest on a midsummers night: from the canopy of the trees to the roots in the ground.

They meet the sprites, Cobweb, Mustardseed, Peaseblossom and Moth, and take an extraordinary journey into the eye of a cataclysmic storm with "Puck" as their guide.

Gave a unique opportunity for audiences to directly influence the live performance from wherever they are in the world.

Audiences experienced a new performance environment accessed on their mobile, desktop or tablet via the Dream website.

The performance used the latest gaming and theatre technology together with an interactive symphonic score that responds to the actors’ movement during the show.

Produced in partnership with the RSC, Manchester Int'l Festival & the London Philharmonia Orchestra it was broadcast to an audience of over 65,000 people across 10 live performances in the Covid-19 Pandemic.
